Your PDF stays in your browser. Editable mode reconstructs text; scanned pages are inserted as images. Preserve appearance mode uses page images.

Choose editable text or preserved appearance

Convert one PDF to DOCX for editing or reuse in Word. Editable mode reconstructs selectable PDF text; it does not recreate the original document perfectly. Preserve appearance places page images in Word. A scanned PDF has no selectable text to reconstruct: this tool does not perform OCR.

Step by step

  1. Open one PDF and inspect the original preview. Choose Editable text when you need to change text, or Preserve appearance when the page's visual layout matters more.
  2. Choose all pages, the previewed page or a range such as 1-3, 5. Decide whether to keep page breaks; image resolution choices apply to Preserve appearance.
  3. Download the Word document and open it in Word. Check text order, tables, columns and page breaks there; the browser preview is an approximation.

Settings and limits

Conversion modes
Editable mode uses reconstructed text, with graphics behind it when page breaks are kept. Scanned pages fall back to images. Preserve appearance uses images for every page, so its text is not editable.
Pages and resolution
Page ranges are deduplicated and exported in document order. Preserve appearance offers 1×, 2× or 3× resolution; higher resolution increases memory use and DOCX size.
Input and layout limits
Open a PDF of at most 100 MB and 100 pages; unlock password-protected PDFs first. Font substitutions, tables, multiple columns and spacing may change during reconstruction.

Worked example

Download searchable-report.pdf and open it in Editable text mode with page breaks kept. Convert its single page, then open the DOCX in Word.

The lines Monthly report and Total: 125.00 should be editable. Repeat with Preserve appearance: the same page is represented as an image. A scanned copy also becomes an image in Editable mode, because there is no OCR.

Questions and troubleshooting

Why can I not edit the text in Word?

You may have chosen Preserve appearance, or the source page may be scanned. Use Image to text for OCR when you need text from a scan; review the recognized text before reuse.

Why does the Word layout differ from the PDF?

A PDF describes positioned page content rather than Word paragraphs. Reconstruction estimates reading order and formatting. Complex columns and tables need manual review; choose Preserve appearance for visual fidelity.

What should I try if export fails?

Convert fewer pages. In Preserve appearance, lower the resolution. Large rendered images can exceed memory or output limits even when the source PDF is small.
