Add PDF page numbers without changing page order
Add labels to a selected range of existing PDF pages. The tool places numbers over the original content; it does not rearrange pages or erase existing numbering. Keep the original PDF separately.
Step by step
- Open a PDF and check its page previews. Choose the first and last physical pages that should receive labels.
- Set the starting number, format and position. Use the cover shortcut when the opening page should stay unnumbered.
- Inspect the labels on several pages, then download the numbered PDF. Check that text and footer content remain readable.
Settings and limits
- Page range and first number
- Physical page positions select where numbering begins. The first number sets the printed label independently of that position.
- Custom text and totals
- Use # for the current label, {total} for the last printed number and ## for a literal hash.
- Position, size and margin
- Choose a corner or centered edge, then adjust text size and inset. Long labels may be reduced to fit.
Worked example
Open organize-sample.pdf, number pages 2 through 4, start at 1 and use the custom template shown below.

Example input
PDF [1, 2, 3, 4] · [2–4] · 1
Page # of {total}Expected result
[1] —
[2] Page 1 of 3
[3] Page 2 of 3
[4] Page 3 of 3The first page stays untouched. The remaining labels end at 3; the total follows the numbered range, not all physical pages.
Questions and troubleshooting
Why does the total differ from the document length?
It represents the last printed number. Starting above the usual first label also changes that total.
Can this replace numbers already on the PDF?
No. Existing text stays underneath the new label. Choose another position or edit the source document first.
What if the file will not open?
Password-protected or damaged PDFs may fail. Export an accessible copy from the source application and try that copy.
