Best for logos and illustrations. Photos are approximated and can produce large SVG files. Transparent PNG areas stay transparent.

Choose the right image and settings for SVG tracing

Tracing turns colored regions of a PNG or JPG into SVG paths. Flat artwork and clear edges usually work better than photographs. The result approximates the input; it cannot recover detail absent from the original.

Step by step

  1. Open a PNG or JPG with a clear subject. Crop unnecessary surroundings beforehand when they would add unwanted paths.
  2. Start with a small color palette and balanced detail. Trace, compare the previews and adjust one setting at a time.
  3. Download the SVG and inspect it at the intended display size. Keep the raster original when accurate photographic detail matters.

Settings and limits

Color palette
Fewer colors simplify regions and reduce paths, but can merge important shades. More colors do not restore missing detail.
Tracing detail
Simple, balanced and detailed modes cap the working image's longest edge at 240, 400 and 600 pixels respectively.
Transparency and text
Transparent areas are omitted. Partial transparency is simplified; text becomes shapes rather than editable or searchable characters.

Worked example

Load color-blocks.png, choose 3 colors and balanced detail. The 600 × 400 source is traced at 400 × 267 pixels.

Example input

600 × 400 px · 3

Expected result

<svg width="600" height="400" viewBox="0 0 400 267">
  <path/> <path/> <path/>
</svg>

The sample SVG contains 3 filled paths and keeps a 600 × 400 display size. It contains no embedded source bitmap.

Questions and troubleshooting

Why did small letters or thin lines disappear?

Downscaling and simplification can remove them. Try detailed mode and a cleaner source; recreate essential text in a vector editor.

Will the SVG always be smaller than the PNG?

No. Complex photos can produce many paths and larger files. Compare actual downloads rather than assuming vector output is smaller.

Why is a fully transparent image rejected?

There are no visible pixels to trace. Choose artwork with visible shapes instead of an empty transparent canvas.
